Who is Imeh Smith?
Imeh Smith is the founding president of The Circle’s Edge, Inc., The Alvin T. Smith Foundation, and daughter of Alvin T. Smith. She is a writer, artist, and creator of various programs and activities with similar missions as The Circle’s Edge, Inc. or part of The Circle’s Edge, Inc. itself. She realized growing up - and being a victim of it - that from grade school on up, there are no major programs addressing the root cause of being ostracized, taunted, and feeling left out. Since Columbine High, many administrators, social groups, and concerned citizens have implemented programs to address peer mediation, tolerance, among other things, however little help existed prior.
.
She feels that the biggest reason for being ostracized and left out is misunderstanding, stereotypes, and myths, i.e. ignorance. What people do not understand, they fear and/or reject. She feels that once someone is educated of their ignorance, they will begin to understand. Once one understands, one begins to except and not ostracize.
.
She holds a Bachelors Degree of Art from Howard University majoring in Communications with a focus in Radio-TV-and Film, and a minor in Theater Arts. An avid traveler, visiting all over the US, Japan, and Korea, she plans to visit Europe and N. Africa this spring. She was even groundbreaking in her travels to Onomichi, Heroshima, Japan - in a one year English teaching and exchange program - by being the first participant like herself (Afro-American) in that city on the JET Programmer.
.
She is currently perusing another degree in Cultural Anthropology and Linguistics at Maryland University. She is a connoisseur of music and - like her father - enjoys exposure to all types of culture, art, music, dance, science, religion, history, and language. In fact, she she started The Alvin T. Smith Foundation (http://atsfoundation.50megs.com/index.html) in honor of him.
.
In the past, she studied Chinese, Italian, Swahili, French, Korean, and Hebrew. She currently has a working knowledge of Japanese, Spanish, and American Sign Language. She is presently working on several books, CD’s, and a collection of footage she gathered and recorded while in Japan.
